The Non-profit Scientific Research Department is made up of the following:
· State Key Lab of Veterinary Biotechnology (SKLVB)
· Animal Influenza Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory (including PC3 facilities)
· Division of Avian Infectious Diseases
· Division of Swine Infectious Diseases
· Division of Large Animal Infectious Diseases
· Division of Zoonosis
· Division of Bacterial Diseases
· Experimental Animal Center
· Basic Condition and Technology Services Center
In accordance with the Chinese Government’s strategic directives and the principle of knowledge innovation, HVRI will become a base for innovative animal medicine, and is predominant and influential both nationally and internationally by:
· keeping track of leading-edge veterinary science
· undertaking key national scientific research programs
· solving serious science and technology problems related to animal infectious diseases
· promoting the development of theories and techniques on the prevention and control of animal infectious diseases.
Weike Biotechnology Development Company is made up of the following: Animal Bioproduct Engineering-technology Research Center, Attenuated Vaccine and Inactivated Vaccine GMP Standard Workshops, Monoclonal Antibody Reagents and Nucleic Acid Preparations Workshop, Quality Control Division, and Condition Assurance Division. Its main tasks are to:
· meet the need of prevention and control of serious animal infectious diseases by developing effective and practical animal bioproducts
· raise manufacturing standards to the most advanced level in the world
· provide for industrial development of animal bioproducts with matching technical measures
· solve key technical problems in GMP production
· study internationally certificated quality management standards for bioproducts and chemicals
· boost development of the animal pharmaceutical industry
· train high-level staff.
The Institute has been honored with 254 certificates, prizes and awards for its various achievements. Among them are two First-Class, one Second-Class and one Third-Class National Invention Prize; one First Prize and seven Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress; six National Science Conference Awards; one National Xinghuo (Spark Program ) Award; one National Bumper Harvest Award; two Promotion Award from the National Science & Technology Council; 46 Province/Ministry level Awards; one Chengjiageng Prize; one Heliang-Heli prize; one State Golden Prize for Patent of Invention; and so on, of which 50 achievements were world-class.
Furthermore, HVRI has developed more than 120 kinds of diagnostic reagents and vaccines for the prevention and control of animal infectious diseases. Especially in recent years, HVRI has played a very important role in the fight against SARS and avian influenza, and has made a great contribution to the study of prevention and control of animal infectious diseases and zoonosis.
Among the great engineering and technological achievements in the 20th century, selected by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, all four great achievements in veterinary medicine (EIAV donkey leucocyte attenuated vaccine, attenuated lapinized hog cholera virus vaccine, rindpest attenuated ovinized and caprined vaccine for cattle, bovine pleuropneumonia attenuated lapinized vaccine) were developed by HVRI. China’s national leaders also think highly of HVRI’s achievements. In 2005, Premier WEN Jia-Bao and Vice Premier HUI Liang-Yu sent congratulatory letters and instructions; in January 2006, Vice Premier HUI Liang-Yu visited HVRI and praised highly HVRI’s key role in the battle against avian influenza and its outstanding contribution to the country.
With strong support and guidance from central and local governments and various professional societies, and the diligent work of several generations of staff for more than 50 years, HVRI has made not only many nationally and internationally recognized academic achievements, but also outstanding achievements in civilized workplace affairs. It has been given a civilized pacesetter award by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Heilongjiang Provincial Government and Harbin municipal Government. It has formed its own spirit of “Solidarity, Dedication, Factuality and Innovation”.
With full passion and endeavor all the faculty of HVRI are keeping pace with the times, doing innovative research, dedicating themselves to the cause of building HVRI into a first-class, world-leading animal medicine innovation center and industrial base equipped with top-class talented researchers, equipment and instruments, administration, achievements, and reputation.
